Challenging mathematical experiences

The reSolve Protocol emphasises the importance of challenging all students and of developing a knowledge-building culture in the classroom. This module presents both a rationale for, and examples of, challenging tasks that are accessible to all students and that create opportunities for them to learn mathematics. It then outlines some specific actions that teachers can take to establish the classroom norms that encourage and support students working on the challenges.

The goals of the module include that participating teachers will:

  • Consider the importance of challenging all students in their learning;
  • Use project tasks to identify which aspects might be challenging;
  • Discuss teacher actions that encourage students to take up and persist with challenges; and
  • Consider the implications for their own practice.
