Students use algebra and proportional reasoning to investigate how changing the size of a paper rectangle affects the dimensions of a box folded from that paper.
This sequence is for students who:
- can calculate volumes of rectangular prisms
- are familiar with relating nets to 3D solids
- can recognise and work with fractions as part of a whole.
Lesson 1: Quarter Cartons
Students fold origami boxes from proportional paper rectangles, compare the dimensions of the boxes, and create an algebraic formula for the volume of a box folded from a paper rectangle of any dimensions.
