Year 8

Quarter Cartons

Students fold boxes from proportional paper rectangles then use algebraic reasoning to compare the boxes.

This is a classic reSolve sequence aligned with the Australian Curriculum V8.4. It is only available as a downloadable package.

Students use algebra and proportional reasoning to investigate how changing the size of a paper rectangle affects the dimensions of a box folded from that paper.

This sequence is for students who:

  • can calculate volumes of rectangular prisms
  • are familiar with relating nets to 3D solids
  • can recognise and work with fractions as part of a whole.

Lesson 1: Quarter Cartons

Students fold origami boxes from proportional paper rectangles, compare the dimensions of the boxes, and create an algebraic formula for the volume of a box folded from a paper rectangle of any dimensions.
