Assessing Reasoning: Year 5 Exemplars

These exemplar tasks are part of the special topic on “Assessing Mathematical Reasoning”. The exemplars are designed to provoke students’ mathematical reasoning and to assist teachers engage in formative assessment of students’ abilities to analyse, generalise and justify. Each exemplar is aimed at Year 5, with adaptability to other years. Students analyse the task situation, form or test conjectures, and explain their thinking to others. Lesson materials include task information with suggested reasoning prompts and further activities, along with multiple annotated work samples illustrating the assessment rubric. 

 

Exemplar: What Else Belongs? (Year 5)

In this task, students find common properties of three given numbers. They notice and describe properties of number; such as size, order, composition, place value, multiples, factors, even or odd. The students justify why some numbers have similar or dissimilar properties. There is a strong emphasis on Analysing – seeing what is the same and what is different. The task can very readily be adapted to other content and year levels.
